Three times a year, give or take, Mercury seems to hesitate. The swiftest of the seven planets slows, stops, and for some three weeks walks backwards through the zodiac. Astronomy explains the movement without mystery: Mercury runs inside the Earth’s orbit, and when he passes between us and the Sun, seen from here, he appears to move backwards. The tradition was always less interested in the movement than in its meaning, and the meaning of a planet that turns back is an old one: return. Abraham ibn Ezra, in the twelfth century, read in a retrograde planet the return of someone who had left home. What departed comes back. What was said is heard again.

This 2026 cycle has a feature that is not often seen: Mercury does not turn back alone. Venus has been moving backwards since early October, and for three whole weeks the two planets that live between the Earth and the Sun, the planet of words and the planet of desire, are retrograde at the same time. They pass in front of the Sun eleven days apart, and they turn forward again within a few hours of each other.

The dates of this cycle

  • 4 October · Mercury, still moving forward, crosses 5° Scorpio. The shadow begins here: the stretch of sky he will cover three times, once going, once coming back, once going again.
  • 24 October · Mercury stands still at 20°59′ Scorpio and begins to move backwards.
  • 28 October · he enters the Sun’s glare and can no longer be seen.
  • 30 October · he meets Mars, in Leo, at a tense angle.
  • 31 October to 8 November · he is burnt by the Sun, as the tradition put it: less than eight and a half degrees from it.
  • 4 November · he passes through the heart of the Sun, at 12° Scorpio.
  • 13 November · he stands still at 5°02′ Scorpio and moves forward again. Around these days he leaves the Sun’s glare, and in the days that follow he reappears before dawn, in the east.
  • 30 November · he returns to 20°59′, where he first stopped. The shadow ends.

The whole retreat happens inside Scorpio. Between late September and early December, Mercury does not change sign once.

Mercury in the house of Mars

Scorpio is the night house of Mars: fixed water, the sign of what is hidden, what is kept, what is owed and what is inherited. Mercury has neither home nor exaltation here. In the old language he is a pilgrim, walking on land that is not his own and depending on what he finds. Yet there is one stretch of Scorpio that belongs to him. In the Egyptian division of the terms, degrees 11 to 19 of the sign are Mercury’s, and that is exactly where he stands between 29 October and 5 November, the days when he passes through the Sun. Afterwards he keeps retreating through the degrees of Venus and finally stops in those of Mars.

A pilgrim Mercury, walking backwards, buried in the Sun’s light and in the house of Mars, is not a Mercury who speaks easily. He is a Mercury who listens, investigates, rereads. The conversations of this cycle are seldom on the surface: they are about accounts, about secrets, about who owes what to whom, about something said long ago that still weighs.

Two conversations left halfway

On 2 October, still moving forward, Mercury made a tense angle with Mars. On 30 October, now retreating, he makes the same angle again, like someone returning to an argument that was never settled. Mars, meanwhile, is in Leo and on his way to Jupiter, whom he joins on 16 November. The matter comes back with more force than it had.

The other conversation never even happened. In October, Mercury was heading for a tense angle with Jupiter and came within a little over two degrees of it. He stopped short. The ancients had a name for this, refranation: the planet promises the contact and turns back before keeping the promise. The angle only closes on 4 December, after the cycle is over. Some words are left in suspense by this season, and it is worth knowing that they are suspended, not lost.

In the heart of the Sun

The centre of the cycle is 4 November. Before and after, for more than a week, Mercury is burnt: so close to the Sun that the tradition counted him weakened, without a voice of his own, like someone speaking beside someone shouting. But there is a point where that weakness turns over. When a planet comes within seventeen minutes of arc of the Sun’s centre, the tradition says it is in the heart of the Sun, and William Lilly, among others, held that place to be one of the greatest strengths a planet can have. On 4 November, for some six hours, Mercury stands there.

It is also the moment Mercury changes sides. Until then he was the evening star, seen after sunset. After the heart of the Sun he is reborn as the morning star, the one that announces the day. Retrograde motion is not an interruption: it is a passage through the centre, and what comes out on the other side is not what went in.

Venus turns back with him

Venus stood still on 3 October at 8° Scorpio, and has been moving backwards ever since. On 24 October, the same day Mercury stopped, she passed in front of the Sun, and the next day she walked back into Libra, her own sign. She moves forward again on 14 November, a few hours after Mercury. The two planets closest to the Sun, the one who speaks and the one who loves, follow almost the same path at the same time: they stop, turn back, pass the Sun, are reborn as morning stars and set off again almost together.

When word and desire turn back together, what returns is rarely just a conversation or just an affection. It is both: what you said to someone you care for, what was left unsaid, the agreement made with the heart and not the head, or the other way round.

With measure

Superstition is always at the door of these cycles, and it is best not to let it in. Mercury retrograde does not break computers or cancel contracts. The sky decides for no one: the stars incline, they do not compel. What this time inclines towards is backwards and inwards. Rereading before signing, listening twice before answering, going back to someone left without a reply, looking for the paper that went missing. None of this is wasted time. It is what time is made of when it is given attention.

And no transit is read on its own. These same days touch each person according to where Scorpio and Libra fall in their chart, and according to the conversation between Mercury, Venus and everything else. To see where this cycle lands in you, open your birth chart and look for Scorpio.

On 13 November, when Mercury moves forward again, what came back does not come back to stay the same. It comes back to be seen again, in a different light.
