Venus is here in its detriment, in Aries — cardinal fire ruled by Mars, its contrary. The moist and fecundating gentleness lodges in the house of the dry and ardent warrior, and finds itself ill at ease. It inclines to a sudden and impatient love, that catches like a blaze and is soon consumed; the desire of union comes quickly to the conquest but scarcely knows how to wait. It gives impetuous affections, jealousies promptly inflamed, pleasures taken without delay. The concord that Venus brings is here forced to don armour: it harmonises by transport, not by patience, and what it sweetens mingles with martial harshness. It tends to a virile beauty, of frank features and visible ardour, and to passions that burn before they ripen. There is generosity in the impulse and frankness in the gesture, but it wants repose: the star of pleasure runs where it ought to linger, and spends in haste what it would gain in slowness.
