Jupiter in Capricorn

In Capricorn — cardinal earth, sign of Saturn — Jupiter stands in his fall, deposed from on high and set to serve in a cold earth that thwarts his warm and broad nature. The greater benefic finds himself here brought low: generosity costs, faith grows cold, abundance is slow and is measured by the grain. Saturn tightens what Jupiter would have loose: largesse turns to calculation, mercy turns to severity, religion turns to discipline without consolation. It inclines to a hard justice, to a difficult confidence, to a good that is given only after much weighing. It gives, even so, a sense of duty and perseverance in serious purpose, an ambition to rise by merit, and patience. But because the star of expansion is here in his fall, the blessing descends smothered: what in other places gushes, here drips, and the generous judge risks becoming the creditor who collects more than he pardons.
