In Virgo — mutable earth, sign of Mercury — Jupiter stands in his detriment, hemmed into a sign that measures all and criticizes all. His generosity hesitates, calculates, holds back; faith demands proofs; the broad wisdom narrows into technical knowledge and the skill of a trade. Mercury sets Jupiter to the service of painstaking work: justice becomes the letter of the regulation, religion becomes an anxious observance of rules. It gives application, method, a talent for healing and remedying, a useful hand in what is small and necessary. But because the greater benefic has no house here, freedom fails him: abundance shrinks to parsimony, confidence to mistrust, and the grave judgement loses itself in endless distinctions. The measure that in other signs he has to spare, here fails him through excess of measuring.
