In Virgo — mutable earth — Mercury has a double glory: here is its domicile and also its exaltation, a unique case in the Zodiac. As lord of the house, it possesses itself entire; as exalted, it is honoured above its measure — it settles upon the earth that the dry and the cold make kindred to its nature, and in it the judgement crystallises. The mind is exact, analytical, attentive to detail and to fine distinction; nothing escapes it of what can be weighed and ordered. The word is precise, sober, chosen grain by grain. It inclines to method, to criticism, to rigorous calculation, to the art of discerning the true from the false and the useful from the superfluous. It gives a talent for patient study, for clean writing, for minute work and the craft well done. The danger lies in the excess of its own virtue: to divide so far that the whole is lost, to corrode itself in minutiae and to take criticism for wisdom.
