The ninth house — of long journeys, faith, religion, philosophy, and higher learning — receives Mercury very well, lord of study and understanding; though cadent, it is a house where the mind is elevated. It inclines toward an intelligence given to philosophy, science, languages, and the study of religion and law, toward instructive and profitable long journeys, and toward a vocation for teaching, writing, or preaching; it favours knowledge gained far from home and dealings with foreign peoples and ideas. Dignified in its sign, it makes a scholar, master, or enlightened traveller, of easy speech in high matters; afflicted, it brings sophistry, restless doubt, scattering of studies, or quarrels of doctrine.
