What a chart is
Every chart begins with an ordinary fact. You were born somewhere, and at that moment the sky above that place looked a particular way — this planet just clearing the eastern skyline, that one already overhead, the Moon somewhere behind you in the west. A chart is that arrangement, written down.
Not a symbol of the sky. The sky, as seen from one point on the Earth’s surface, at one instant. Everything you will learn in this degree is a way of reading that photograph more carefully.
The observer stands at the centre
Traditional astrology is geocentric: it places the Earth — more precisely, the person — at the centre and describes everything else as it appears from there.
This is the point most often misunderstood, so it is worth being exact. Geocentric does not mean we believe the Sun goes round the Earth. It means the frame of reference is the observer. When a surveyor measures the height of a hill, they do not first correct for the curvature of the galaxy; they measure from where they stand, because that is what the measurement is for. A chart is the same kind of instrument. It answers the question what did the sky look like from here, then — and the answer is only interesting because somebody was standing there.
Ptolemy built his astronomy on this frame in the Almagest, and his astrology on the same frame in the Tetrabiblos. The mathematics has been rebuilt many times since. The frame has not moved, because the question has not changed.
Two motions, and only two
Almost all of the astronomy you need reduces to two movements happening at once.
The primary motion is the one you can watch. The whole sky turns from east to west, once in roughly twenty-four hours. Stars rise, climb to their highest point, and set. This is the motion that makes something rising at the moment of your birth, and something else culminating.
The secondary motion is the slow one, and it runs the other way — west to east, against the daily turn. This is the planets walking forward through the zodiac. The Sun takes a year to go round. The Moon moves about thirteen degrees a day, which is why it changes sign every two or three days while Saturn takes almost thirty years to cross the whole circle.
Hold those two apart in your mind and a great deal becomes simple. The daily turn decides where in the sky a planet is — rising, overhead, setting, hidden below. The slow walk decides where along the circle it stands. Two different questions, two different answers, and both are on the wheel in front of you.
Three great circles, and where the angles come from
Draw a sphere around the observer and three circles matter.
The horizon is the one you already know: the line where sky meets ground, dividing what is visible from what is not. The meridian runs from due north, up over your head, down to due south — the line a body crosses at its highest point of the day. And the ecliptic is the path the Sun appears to trace through the year. The zodiac is the band along it.
The ecliptic is tilted against the equator by a little over twenty-three degrees. That tilt is what gives us seasons, solstices and equinoxes, and it is the reason the Sun’s height at noon changes through the year.
Now the useful part. The ascendant is not a mystery: it is simply the degree of the ecliptic that is crossing the eastern horizon at your moment. Where the two circles meet, that is the point. Likewise the midheaven is where the ecliptic crosses the meridian — the highest point the zodiac reaches that day, from that place.
This is why two people born the same day, one in Lisbon and one in São Paulo, have charts that are alike in one respect and quite different in another. The planets have barely moved along the ecliptic in those hours. But the sky has turned, and the horizon at each place cuts it in a different place. Same slow walk, different daily turn.
Reading the wheel as a photograph
Once you know the angles come from the horizon and the meridian, the drawing stops being abstract.
The left of the wheel is east: what was rising. The top is what was culminating. The right is west, what was setting, and the bottom is the sky beneath your feet at that moment — below the horizon, invisible, but there. A planet drawn at the bottom of your chart was genuinely on the other side of the Earth from you when you were born.
That orientation is worth keeping, because it stops you from reading the chart as a diagram of ideas. It is a picture of a real sky, and every technique in this degree is a way of asking that picture a sharper question.
The three layers
You will meet the chart in three layers, and this degree takes them in order.
The signs say where along the ecliptic something stands. The houses say where it stands relative to your horizon — which is why they depend on your birth place and time, and change every four minutes. The planets are the bodies themselves, and they carry the meaning the other two layers modify.
A fourth layer, the aspects, describes how the planets see each other. That comes in Lesson 5, once the first three are steady.
One caution before you go further, and it is the difference between reading a chart and reciting one: the layers are read together. A planet is not “in Leo” the way an object is in a box. It is in a sign, in a house, seen or unseen by other planets, strong or weak by the older measures you will learn in Lesson 6 — and the judgement comes from the whole. Charts are not read one line at a time.
A note on the zodiac we use
The zodiac in this school is tropical: it is anchored to the seasons, with zero degrees of Aries fixed at the northern spring equinox, following Ptolemy.
There is a real astronomical fact underneath this, and it deserves stating plainly rather than being discovered later as a scandal. The equinox point drifts slowly backwards against the constellations — about one degree every seventy-two years, a full circuit in roughly twenty-six thousand. Around the beginning of the common era the two coincided; today they have separated by some twenty-four degrees. So a tropical sign and the constellation of the same name are not the same thing, and have not been for a long time.
Both zodiacs are used by living traditions. This one is anchored to the year — to light, season and the Sun’s relationship with the horizon — and that is the tradition these lessons teach.
Exercise — your own sky
Open the free chart tool and cast your own chart. If you do not know your birth time, use the “I don’t know the time” option; most of this lesson still holds, and Lesson 4 will explain exactly what is lost without it. Then find three things: Write down the three answers before the next lesson. You will use them again in Lesson 4, when the houses arrive, and in Lesson 7, when we ask whether you were born by day or by night.
- Your ascendant. Which sign and degree was rising? Look at the left edge of the wheel, marked AC.
- Your midheaven. Which sign is at the top, marked MC? Notice it is usually not the sign three houses along in a tidy way — the tilt of the ecliptic sees to that.
- One planet above the horizon, and one below. Everything drawn in the upper half was visible in the sky when you were born. Everything in the lower half was under your feet. Which of your planets were up, and which were down?
