In the second house — of movable goods, of gain and of what the hands gather — Mercury enters a succedent house, of middling strength, and besides averse to the ascending degree, a place of lesser light. Determined to this house, it binds the mind to money and the wit to profit: it makes of the word, the calculation and the exchange the instruments of sustenance. It inclines to gain by intelligence more than by force — by commerce, by writing, by another’s accounts, by mediation and by the business of quick hands. It gives a knack for appraising, for closing deals, for making what one possesses yield by cunning and not by luck. It tends to a movable fortune, that comes and goes with the rhythm of occasions, won in one throw and risked in another. As Mercury, without colour of its own, is tinged by what surrounds it, it remains to know in what state it is found here, to say whether the gain is secure or slippery.
